Keālia Pond NWR. Native wasp of Ectemnius genus, crabronidae subfamily, Oreocrabro subgenera. Used guide "Revision of Hawaiian Crabroninae with Synopsis of Hawaiian Sphecidae" to determine species, and verified with book "A Systematic Review of the Ectemnius (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) of Hawaii" that Ectemnius mandibularis has been found in coastal areas of Maui. I found this (dead) wasp being carried by ants out of a hole in the soil.

Pinao 'ula (?) on naio. Possibly another kind of damselfly because the Orangeblack Hawaiian Damselfly was apparently extirpated from Maui according to Bishop Museum information. But it looks similar to pictures, and it is in a lowland aquatic environment.

Ecological succession: organic matter started accumulating at the downhill end of this rain gutter -- or perhaps I should say ex-rain gutter :-). A plant community is thus evolving linearly, with the newest plants on the left: grasses, then ferns, then woody plants. Practically a classroom demo!

Seeking IDs on any of the plants that may be IDable. Thank you to Forest & Kim for tentative IDs so far (all nonnative):

Melinis repens (Natal red top), www.starrenvironmental.com/images/species/?q=melinis+repe...

Phlebodium aureum (Lauae haole), www.starrenvironmental.com/images/species/?q=phlebodium+a.... 2-4 rows of sori per leaflet; shot at www.inaturalist.org/observations/493879 shows them a little better.

Schefflera actinophylla (Octopus tree, umbrella plant), www.starrenvironmental.com/images/species/?q=schefflera+a...

Hylaeus longiceps along the coastline of Papaula ( end of Kahalui airport runway ).
Found visiting the flowers of the Morning glory plant.
I had gone there to go fishing and I was getting irritated by what I thought were flies landing on my
feet. But after some observation I saw the yellow markings on their faces. So my day of fishing turned
into a day of observing and capturing photos of these bees. I walked the along the coastline in the
Wailuku direction in front of some residences and saw that they seemed to nest in the hard packed sand
right above the high water line. I also found them in a high traffic area ( parking lot ) where people
were sitting, camping, fishing and otherwise people just walking around.

Hylaeus anthracinus at Keoneoio ( La Perouse Bay ) about 100 yards into the Kings trail inside of
a dry river bed.
There was only one flowering plant in the area and they seemed to nest right next to it in the rocky soil.

Found on an Ilima plant, bush type. Many other native plants in the yard including the rare Ohai plant.
There are many ilima plants outside of the property but I have not seen any Hylaeus in the immediate
area outside.
