Found in a mixed hardwood/conifer forest on the north fork of the Yuba river, on the Sierra Field Campus grounds, Tahoe National Forest
Growing in duff underneath Abies concolor and Calocedrus decurrens
Pileus brown, smooth, flat. Lamellae vibrant rusty orange/brown, close, broadly attached. Stipe white, fibrous, thick, bulbous at base. Cortina faint
Smell like musty blue cheese
Taste bitter
KOH brown/orange/dark red on pileus and brownish on stipe
10-20, near side of lake, abundant snow not in immediate vicinity, spores released when disturbed
Brown cap,
Light brown gills,
Purple stipe,
White UV at base,
Indistinct odor/taste,
Indistinct KOH;flouresces yellow,
Near sitka spruce/hemlock
Really brittle, had trouble pulling one out without breaking the cap.
Maybe? Or hypomyces? On Gyromitra montana
