Paul, I can see why someone might think that photo you sent was a Redband Trout. A 7” – 8” Rainbow Trout still exhibiting parr marks certainly could lead one to think this was a Redband. However, the Priest Lake watershed, and the Pend Oreille watershed, are not known to support Redband Trout and it has never been part of their historic range. I’ve attached a couple of maps that describe where Redbands are known to exist and what their historical range is. I also attached a couple of photos of genetically pure Redband Trout we picked up while sampling in Shorty and Saddle Creek (Kootenai River watershed) up out of Bonners Ferry. Notice how predominant the parr marks are on these small resident adult fish.
Surprised to get a fish this size in this creek. Might be the reason larvae were hard to find
Under a bridge in the same creek, another healthy westslope in wolf lodge
There's a healthy population of westslope hiding in the wolf lodge creek that runs north along the road. Very cool to see.
