Location: Found attached to a rock in about 15 ft of water. Nahant, MA
Habitat Type: Found on rocky bottoms, from low tide line to 2414m
Physical Description: Small disc and five cylindrical pointed arms of equal length. Two rows of tube feet. Small, equal sized spines that form a fine granular opening.
Fun Fact: It can absorb nutrients from its outer surface.

Physical description: Round head and thoracic segment are fused. Second segment has mantis-like claws. Third and fourth segments have paddle-shaped gills. Last three have grasping appendages. Two pairs of antennae.
Fun Fact: Stands up when it about to catch its prey by holding on to something like seaweed.

Physical description: Lacy crusts of irregular shapes. Zooids are rectangular with a membranous frontal wall. Colonies spread several inches.
Fun Fact: Gets its name Kelp Lace because it is common on kelp where it can grow on the stipe and the blades.

Location found: In the upper intertidal on Pumphouse Beach (rocky) in Nahant, MA.
Habitat type: L. saxatilus can be found on both sides of the North Atlantic (north of the Chesapeake Bay in North America, and north of the Straits of Gibraltar in Europe). It can also be found on the Pacific Coast of North America, but is restricted to San Francisco Bay (introduced species).
Physical description: The shell of L. saxatilus is less than 2 cm in height, with a defined "shoulder" between whorls. Color varies from white to dark brown.
Fun fact: There is high variation in L. saxatilus appearance in the North Atlantic, much of which is thought to be driven by responses to crab predation.
