Found stretched across the Backbone Trail. There had been a slight rain during the morning and thunderstorms were moving into the area. The rain was brought by the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolores. I specifically went mtn biking today in hopes of finding a mtn kingsnake moving with the change in weather. Was thrilled to observe this rather large adult.
Found on a Granitic, Alluvial Plain area. Elevation 2800 feet.
It was seen on a nest where a towhee chick had been seen a day before. The chick was no longer there.
The gopher snake was going up the branches until a pair of towhees forced it off the branches. A towhee then guided a chick across the path to a safer distance
It was dead.

Everytime I walk along this area of road, I look for reptiles on the north side of the road. I often see them there. I've seen a few kings snakes, rattlers, large Ali gator lizards...didn't want to grab it to pull it out of the bush, so I just got a night shot of the back end of it.
