Mid-successional, mixed conifer forest, dominant over story Pseudotsuga menziesii and Thuja plicata

Simple, opposite, ovate leaves with acuminate tips and netted venation. Very small terminal white flowers and alternate buds. Soft, smooth leaves. Round stems.

Urban neighborhood environment, no known plant associations

Yellow flowers in umbels, 5-merous, appear to have inferior ovaries. Leaves thin, soft tendrils, compound. Stems smooth and round. Flowering.

I recognized this Madrone - Arbutus menziesii by the beautiful cinnamon red colored bark that is peeling. I did not not note any fruiting or flowering. The I ate leaves are deep green, leathery with a high gloss. The tree itself was about 40’ tall but still an understory tree in comparison to the evergreen cedars.

Opposite, simple, lanceolate leaves, netted leaf venation, leaves are smooth and slightly glossy and a deep green color, stems are round and terminate in 2 or 4 leaves. No flowers or fruits visible at this time.

16 miles south of Colville, Washington, on the tree line, by alfalfa field, on the side of the road

Habitat:
By brassica, unknown purple wild flower, grass, and thistle. Gravel and sand soil, dry, dead plant matter, under the plant is moist, large rocks (granite)

Descriptive Features:
Smells like mint or sage, is a bush, has flower buds, small black bugs cover some of the stem tips, seeds, hardy plant, tall (plant about 4 feet, fence post about 5 feet 3 inches), four bushes grow together, darker green by the roots, sea green in the middle, light green on top, large leafs lower down the plant, strong stem, flexible tips

Location: near a highway right next to a sheer cliff

Bright yellow flowers with five main petals. Reddish stems at the bottom half of the plant. Small green lanceolate leaves.

Habitat: Overstory dominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii and Thuja plicata. Understory dominated by Gaultheria shallon and Polystichum munitum

The leaves are shiny and have a waxy feel. The newer leaves are a lighter green and the older ones are a darker green. The tips are poky, but softer on the newest leaves. About 12-15 ft tall.
