This 3rd site was too flooded so I took some nearby observations as we did our drone photos
Drone?
This tree appears to be on the way out. Estimated age is likely a few hundred years - likely before any permanent settlement was in the area. This tree was is in an area that's had significant erosion and has been damaged by contractor work crews as well, including heavy vehicle equipment that was backed into it last year.
I think we need to rebrand the Broccoli haircut as the Flycatcher.

Finally stumbled on something with fasciation!
Degraded limestone remnant.
Does a person ever become inured to fallen trees in remnant land?
Four other trees of similar stature, age, and height in this area have fallen over the past six months. The habitat is quickly changing from open woods with remnant species that have likely been here for millennia to sunnier weedier habitat. I imagine in a few decades the creek will be surrounded by erosion control systems and little of this habitat will be left. It's depressing to observe this happening in slow motion.

Did some urban dove surveys this morning and waited at this light for a loooong time. Spotted a couple critters outside the window of the truck! :)
After finishing up my urban dove surveys for this morning, I went to Kiowa Park -- mostly a recreational park, but there was still some good habitat here along the creek!

At lunch, I was super lucky to watch the celebration of the new Nature Leaders group! These 5th graders take younger students on nature walks at 12 Hills. Most amazing program ever! :)
