XXL winged insect, flared at tail end, tapers towards “waist”, large round lighter area between head and where wings attach to body. Big eyeballs, long skinny snout. Two very very thin parts protruding from mouth, probing motion (like antenna or proboscis). Flew away. Seen late afternoon on north facing porch. Body (not including legs or wings) measured about 2 cm long. Length including legs at rest was about 5 cm.
The tail end appears to be flat and blunt, lacking the pointy ovipositor or stinger type organ that I see in some of the other inaturalist photos.
Update: 3 photos showing more detail in wings and body. The wings have a lighter or translucent linear area on each side.
In these pictures ID directed at the crane fly not other insect
