The butterfly (Chlosyne spp.). is a different observation. I've often seen butterflies at least similar to this species. This was in a riparian zone where the road crosses a stream. The second photo shows the habitat.
This is a putative Heliopsis gracilis x helianthoides var. scabra specimen. Examples were widely scattered along a 2-mile stretch of road. They were growing in loose shale and in partial shade. Specimens were 4-5 dm tall, branched in distal half; leaves 5-8 cm long x 1-2.5 cm wide; 2-5 flowers/plant; rays 5-8/head to 1.2 cm long; leaves sparsely scabrous on both surfaces; stems sparsely scabrous and also moderately hispid with multicellular hairs in 2 lines.
Largest leaf under 8cm, plants about 3’ tall or under, 1 flower head per plant, 6 rays per flower.
