Over a period of 10 years I was doing somatic embryogenesis research with Abutilon theophrasti, working on a way to reduce the impact of this introduced weed species. These photos are from that research experience. The second picture shows typical development of flower and fruit over a period of about 3 weeks. We tagged flower buds when they first appeared and followed their development day by day. By day 8, the flower was fully open for pollination and by day 9 the flowers were fading. Seed development quickly followed in the spiky fruit.
