In 2010 organiseerde de Gemeente Utrecht in samenwerking met de Zoogdiervereniging de eerste Vleermuizen in de Stad-dag. Die groeide in de jaren erna uit tot het jaarlijkse Vleermuizen in de Stad Symposium. Dit symposium vindt steeds in een andere gemeente plaats. Het wordt georganiseerd door de gemeente ter plaatse, in samenwerking met de gemeente Utrecht, regelmatig bijgestaan door de Zoogdiervereniging.

In een boeiende reportage in De Groene Amsterdammer wordt de vermaarde vogelkenner Ben Koks gevolgd op excursie door het Groninger landschap. Hij is gefascineerd door het gedrag van vogels die kenmerkend zijn voor het oude #boerenland, zoals de (blauwe en grauwe) kiekendief.
De kiekendief is volgens Koks de kanarie in de kolenmijn, de signaalvogel die verdwijnt als de #bodem verarmt en het landschap teloorgaat. Niet voor niets staat de kiekendief op de Rode lijst van Nederlandse broedvogels; een indicatie dat het slecht met ze gaat. De kiekendief attendeert ons echter niet alleen op waar het ecologisch misgaat in het boerenland, maar kan ook de weg wijzen naar een natuurrijker platteland.
Door de stikstofcrisis staat de zoektocht naar een volhoudbare #landbouw weer volop in de belangstelling; een landbouw die in balans is met de natuur, en niet alleen voedsel maar ook biodiversiteit produceert. In die zoektocht kunnen we leren van vogels. De meeste vogels hebben, in de woorden van Koks, baat bij overgangen, combinaties. “De een wil openheid, de ander wil dichte heggen, maar allemaal hebben ze #randen nodig.”
Als we de vogels volgen, komen we niet uit bij grote velden met Engels raaigras, maar bij kleine akkers met diverse gewassen. Waar veel kleine percelen elkaar kruisen, daar is de randlengte het grootst, en dus ook de kans dat je kiekendieven (en andere vogels) aantreft. Het zijn vaak plekken waar gemengde, agarische bedrijven voorkomen, met afwisselende kavels en gewassen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Vlaamse kloosters, waar trappistenmonniken nog ambachtelijke landbouw bedrijven.
De les die deze bijzondere landbouwenclaves ons leren is volgens Koks glashelder: “de oude landbouw is gek nog niet, met zijn ruimte voor natuurlijke vijanden in plaats van pesticiden, en zijn #afwisseling van kleine akkertjes in plaats van grote lappen grond met één gewas.” Koks’ observatie wordt gestaafd door wetenschappelijke studies naar de biodiversiteit in landschappen met groenblauwe dooradering, wisselende perceelgrootte en variatie in teelten. Die is hoger dan in eenvormige landbouwlandschappen met teeltspecialisatie.
Willen we de biodiversiteit op het boerenland laten opbloeien, dan moeten we dus een landbouw van #lappendekens stimuleren. In dit kader is het recente plan om zo’n 220.000 hectare heggen, houtwallen en natuurvriendelijke oevers aan te leggen en duurzaam te beheren cruciaal. Dit Aanvalsplan Landschap, een initiatief van natuur- en milieufederaties, provincies, waterschappen en boerenorganisaties, verdient ruimhartige ondersteuning vanuit Den Haag.
Het Aanvalsplan is een belangrijke en serieuze stap op weg naar een landbouw van lappendekens; een (vogel)rijker cultuurlandschap, waar niet alleen voedsel wordt geproduceerd maar ook de #natuur een volwaardige plek heeft.

Webinar: Bats and Wind Energy - Protecting bats around onshore wind farms
For our next Energy & Nature webinar, we will discuss the issue of bat mortality around onshore wind farms and focus on the solutions to reduce the risk for the populations while ensuring energy supply coming from renewables, essential to tackle the climate crisis.
Bats are already highly threatened in Europe and play a significant role in many ecosystems. Therefore, the additional impact of wind turbines can pose a real threat to certain species. Yet little is known about this worldwide issue and the factors causing mortality across wind energy facilities.
Fatalities are due to two main causes: direct collision with the wind turbine blades or barotrauma - fatal injuries that occur when a bat encounters sudden and extreme changes in atmospheric pressure near rotating blades.
Thankfully, solutions exist, such as:
Proper planning and Environmental Impact Assessments run by ecologists in order to identify high-risk areas for bats and help ensure safer siting of wind farms;
Use of tools to calculate the optimal shutdown times for turbines during periods of high bat activity on operating wind farms;
Improve practices through collaborations between all key stakeholders and share knowledge to replicate actions.

Herman Limpens, Senior scientist at the Dutch Mammal Society. He will open the webinar by exposing the issue of bat mortality around onshore wind farms in Europe and present their collaborative work with the Dutch wind industry and authorities.
Élise Drouet, Ecological engineer at H2air, French wind developer. Élise will present the work of H2air to protect bats in case of identified risk and what are the physical and regulatory challenges to implement solutions as a wind developer.
Dr. Simon Ghanem, environmental consultant at KS Umweltgutachten GmbH and KJM Conseil (French branch), will introduce Probat – a freely available tool used in Germany on operating wind farms that calculates turbine specific shutdowns for a bat-friendly operation of the turbines. He will also elaborate on how to improve current practices to move forward.

Workshop: How to plan and deploy nature friendly offshore wind
RGI and Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO/BirdLife International France) co-hosted a workshop at this year's European Maritime Day in Brest, France. In the workshop, RGI led a discussion between key stakeholders on how offshore wind can be sited and deployed in a nature-friendly way, from the implementation of ecosystem-based Maritime Spatial Plans to the application of sensitivity maps and the design of wind infrastructure.
The European Maritime Day (EMD 2023) is an annual two-day event organised by the European Commission which brings together stakeholders from Europe's maritime community. From 24-25 May in Brest, France, more than 1000 participants representing public authorities, European and international organisations, NGOs, and academia came together to discuss the marine environment and a sustainable blue economy.
RGI and Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux(LPO/BirdLife International France) co-hosted a workshop at the European Maritime Day on 25 May. Through a multi-stakeholder discussion, we addressed how offshore wind can be sited and deployed in a nature-friendly way, from the implementation of ecosystem-based Maritime Spatial Plans to the application of sensitivity maps and the design of wind infrastructure. Furthermore, the workshop addressed the need for transboundary and sea basin cooperation, alongside the assessment and mitigation of cumulative impacts, to simultaneously achieve offshore wind energy and nature protection and restoration targets.

Dení Aguilar Bellamy, RGI's Coordinator - Offshore Energy and Nature, spoke in the workshop 'EU projects accelerating the energy transition' led by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) on May 25 from 10:30-11:45. In this workshop, various EU projects funded by CINEA presented their contributions to delivering the European Green Deal objectives and those of the Fitfor55 package, linked to cleaning our energy systems, greening Port operations, growing cutting-edge clean technological innovation for offshore renewables while taking into account public policies and environmental impacts. The Renewables Grid Initiative, WindEurope, and Members of the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature addressed these challenges and opportunities in an invitation-only workshop within WindEurope’s Annual Event in Copenhagen, Denmark. The workshop focused on how to integrate nature into offshore wind and grid infrastructure by bringing together the perspectives of EU Members States, wind developers, transmission system operators, and NGOs. The launch of OCEaN's Statement on ecological criteria inoffshore wind farm auctions provided the starting point for deeper discussions in our second panel.
