More on Kankakee Mallow

Followup on Native Endangered Mallow

Well they are doing great actually. Nothing has chewed on them. I chopped all the garlic back to about 6in last week to give space and light to the other herbaceous perennials and so I had some strong scented stuff to hide where I was planting corn.

Anyway really happy to see the mallows thriving. Hoping they will flower this year but if not they probably will next year.

Ravinia State Forest

Went for a long walk at Ravinia yesterday. I ruined some bow hunter's day I think by being the one other person in the whole forest at the same time. Hope they got something tho.

I've been there twice now and it's a cool beech / oak / hickory forest. There's a high spot way up in the center of the forest with a stand of pines that's really pretty. You can tell you're getting close when you hear the corvids, cause that's where they chill.

Saw some woodpeckers and some grey squirrels. Think I saw a blue jay but not sure. And then tons of little brown birds.

There's a nice spot near the north end of path 1 that leads down this gravel'ed hill and the thing is lined with red oaks and this year was not mast year but last year when I went the acorns were an inch deep.

I managed to gather some black walnut in the parking lot and several honey locust pods that still tasted pretty sweet and had large and/or fat pods.

Native endangered mallow

Monday night planted a new one to the native flowers area, Iliamna remota (Kankakee Mallow). It's an interesting plant that is endemic currently to only one small island in so-called Illinois.

Prairie moon sells seeds but is out of stock: https://www.prairiemoon.com/iliamna-remota-kankakee-mallow-prairie-moon-nursery.html

I found some live plants on etsy, presumably grown from prairie moon seeds. There's a species that probably represents other places its seen in so-called Virginia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iliamna_corei

Bonap here: https://bonap.net/MapGallery/County/Iliamna%20remota.png

Lots of good stuff in this survey done in the aughts: https://thekeep.eiu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=1136&context=bio_fac

And more links from wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iliamna_remota
