LAB 5 Journal entry, Bioblitz (Fungi), Mila Boucher

October 14th, 2021

The Elm mushroom, out of the five observations that I made, is by far the most interesting for many reasons. It is a relatively uniform white/cream colour throughout and grows on trees, especially elm trees. These fungi grow to be quite large, their stem growing perpendicularly to the tree and bending vertically to form the ring-shaped cap. On another note, Elm mushrooms are edible and quite frequently used in the culinary world, being great sources of protein, fiber, and Vitamin B. Furthermore, they are also used for medicinal reasons in China due to their identified compounds that are believed to be anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor and antidiabetic. Lastly, this fungi participates in mycoremediation, which refers to the breakdown and removal of toxins from the environment by the help of enzymes like laccase, which are produced by the elm mushrooms and can biodegrade plastics and degrade dyes (this can be useful in treating water).
