Needed a break this weekend so we packed up and went to the family batch at Waiwera for the weekend with friends. On Saturday morrning I went for a walk over Maungatauhoro; the hill between Waiwera and Wenderholm.
There had been a number of easterlies over the winter and as such many of the trees where suffering damage from the salty wind.
The hill once had a Maori Pa on it and I have recorded a Midden site.
There are more photos on my other camera. These will be loaded latter.
Heard a loud crashing in the bush; then spent the next 5min looking for what caused it. Can you find the Kereru in Picture 2.
A shell fish midden from below Maori Pa site on Maungatauhoro.
This spot is right above a Kereru roost. As such there is an acumulation of seeds and seedlings that have come from the feses of the birds. Here they are eating a lot of Nikau. Also present is Tarairei, Karaka, Mapou, Kahikatea, Kawakawa, and Mahoe.
I always look for these spots when walking to find seed for my nursary. I did not take any from this one though.
