After a long week of work, I was finally able to get some fresh air this Friday night on a walk thru the Urban Ecology Center with my little sister (she was very helpful with the observations). This time we left the dogs in hopes of seeing some more wildlife. We walked up and down and close to the water as well so plenty of terrain...but not too much biodiversity. We saw a lot of the same plants with a few outliers, but overall this was much better than last week. The atmosphere was like a balm to our city-weary bodies at least from my 9-5 during the week. We saw some purple and pink flowers along with some huge wild rhubarb (Lesser burdock). The water was not too clean with a lot of trash by the river which sucked to see, but overall this was a great walk and a chance to spend some time with my little sister :). Today I went on a walk to a local ravine with my mom and our two dogs, Luna and Storm. They were about the only animals we saw on this nippy evening walk. I am not sure if it was the time of year, moisture, or location, but we had a VERY difficult time finding fungi or lichen. The sun filtered down through the trees above us, and this location, where we have been many times before, beckoned like a gateway into another world...this was very refreshing mentally and physically (with the smell of the vegetation and fresh air). Unfortunately, we did not see any signs of insects other than a potential spit bug in its leaf house. I really wish we had seen some dead or alive deer or winter mushrooms as we have before. I attached a cool picture of a coral-like growth on a branch I found while I was on a hike in Boston to make up a little bit for the lack of fungi...! Overall, this walk thru the N. Lighthouse Ravine Trail did not live up to my expectation. Perhaps another location or longer duration will help out with the next assignment.
