Born in Columbus, Ohio, I relocated to Florida in 1989. I have studied Lepidoptera for nearly 50 years, authoring and coauthoring over 100 publications on the subject, including the books "Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio" (1992) and "Butterflies Through Binoculars: Florida" (2000), as well as a forthcoming book on the butterflies of Maine and the Maritime provinces of Canada (2023). I am a research associate of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, Florida Museum of Natural History (Gainesville, FL). I have served as president of the Lepidopterists' Society, president of the Ohio Lepidopterists, and chairman of the Southern Lepidopterists' Society. Since 1999 I have acted as the Florida butterfly coordinator for the Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA) database. I more recently took over as the BAMONA butterfly coordinator for Maine (where for many years I have spent time each season studying butterflies) and New Hampshire. I am particularly interested in wetland butterflies, especially skippers (family Hesperiidae), and enjoy unraveling mysteries of historical entomology. I'm not much of a photographer, but I'll post interesting images from time to time and help identify other observations.
