An Evening Observation

It was early evening and the sun was going down. My feet hurt, and I was cold and hungry. I had not expected this outing to be as long as it was, and I was worn out from hiking six miles earlier in the day. Still, I was ready to go along as Cody, Norm, Josh, and I made another stop. We wandered through a field, observing mustard, sand verbena, and evening primroses as we went. Suddenly, we came upon a large collection of master blister beetles all mating. It seemed to be a rather peaceful, if active, scene until we found one unlucky pair. A large black widow had begun to consume one of the beetles. The unfortunate beetle had been in the middle of mating, and was still connected to its partner, who was dragged down with it. We left to avoid viewing the inevitable conclusion.
