Habitats. These woods are very different from the Midwest

I've been taking my first cup of coffee outside since we've had warmer mornings and observing the wooded area behind my house.
The trees are leafing out - they seem to have changed overnight. Both the very tall trees and the smaller trees on the border. There is one kind of tree with reddish buds or leaves that is slower to leaf out than the others. I wonder what the trees are - both the very tall deciduous trees and the shorter trees with reddish leaves.
I’m from Kansas City, and we don’t have trees that are this tall and lanky there. The soil here is rockier, and these trees have shallow roots. In the Midwest, the trees that get tall have much wider trunks, and they don’t get as tall. There are also different types of wildlife. I had never seen a pileated woodpecker, or a baltimore oriole, or a fisher cat until I lived in Massachusetts. I’m still waiting to see a moose!
Another difference from the Midwest is the peepers. I did not know about vernal pools, or peepers, until I moved here.

It's so incredible how much differences in the environment affect what lives there and even how it grows. I've always lived around here, so I've never spent a lot of time really immersing myself in and studying the habitats in different parts of the countries, it's really interesting to hear your observations on that!
