500,000 Observations for Science

What an amazing number, 500,000. There have now been more than half a million observations within San Diego County thanks to all of you.

Almost each of these holds some scientific value. Being a vacation destination with the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World and other places with captive animals and cultivated plants galore there are always those data points that argued if there if is any scientific value or not.

So please, keep those wild animal and plant observations coming. If you do include some captive or cultivated observations please mark them as so. And lets see how quickly we can get to ONE MILLION observations.

City Nature Challenge 2018

This is the first year that San Diego will be participating in this growing event. Only 3 years old, now more than 50 cities from all around the world are taking part. Help show how species-rich San Diego is by observing and uploading as much as possible during this event, April 27-30, 2018.

San Diego Natural History Museum is the sponsor for San Diego and they have already created a project that will collect all the observations. The link below has some great information about the event.

That same day there will be a bioblitz going on in Balboa Park and that will also collect the observations into both projects.

San Diego County Wildlife Map

Over the past few years I've been building a Google map of birding locations in San Diego County. With the advent of iNaturalist.org I've incorporated the iNaturalist places into the map. Species guides and sightings are automatically built into the map! The map is still, and probably always will be, a work in progress.

Please use the map to find locations to visit and then add your observations to the San Diego County, California Biodiversity project.
