SHELLY OCEAN SWIMMERS: Marine Biodiversity Project

Our philosophy is to record marine species and photograph them without causing disturbance to them or their habitat.

The project aim is to record marine species around Cronulla:through snorkelling and diving, with a view towards gathering information for potential Aquatic Reserves. These reserves could be part of a Marine National Park in the near future. We are hoping to help The National Parks Association and Nature Conservation Council and other interest groups with the "Sydney Marine Park" Project by providing this valuable data and making it available (publicly) online. Darook and Jibbon in particular have endangered populations of seagrasses (Posidonia australis). These areas are nurseries for many fish species. There are near threatened Australian Giant Cuttlefish in the Jibbon area (adjacent to Royal National Park).
We have discovered new areas of soft coral at Cronulla and a large number of fish species have been recorded by members of this group.
