Baby endangered California salmon use different rivers than expected, research shows.

In a paper published online last week in the journal Biological Conservation, a team of California researchers revealed a surprising finding: Juvenile winter-run Chinook aren’t just using the Sacramento River as rearing habitat; after hatching, they also venture in large numbers into the river’s tributaries, including creeks that feed into it below Redding, as well the Feather and the American rivers.

This Little Book is Big on Birds.

Quail not if you don’t know a goose from a grebe. The American River Natural History Association's new bird guide flies to the aid of people who love birds but can’t always name them. Launched in time for Christmas gift-buying -- and small enough for a stocking or pocket – “150 Frequently Seen Birds of California's Great Valley” identifies species common to our local wildernesses, suburbs or riversides.

Lion won’t be hunted after mysterious death of Sacramento mother.

State wildlife officials say they have no plans to try to trap or kill the cougar that fed on Wong. A forensic pathologist determined it was a cougar by using measurements of the bite marks. Steve Torres, who oversees the state’s wildlife investigations lab in Rancho Cordova, said there’s no evidence to suggest a lion that scavenges on a human corpse becomes more likely to hunt humans. Scavenging is normal for cougars, especially if animals are young, sick or frail.
