The Watch Begins!
CALLING ALL SUCKER ENTHUSIASTS
Spring is on the horizon and duty calls! It is time we take to the streams and document the annual spawning runs of our favorite sucker-mouthed fishes. Sucker Watch is looking for dedicated citizens who will take up this noble cause and upload your observations using the Sucker Watch iNaturalist form. All that you need to do is to visit your favorite sucker spot, and/or investigate new potential spawning areas and upload an observation of what you see!
Before I get any further - If this is a topic of interest for you, I highly recommend that you read up on the awesome work of Dr. Karen Murchie at the Shedd Aquarium.. This project was inspired by Dr. Murchie's work, especially the use of citizen science data on sucker spawning in tributaries of the Great Lakes.
An Introduction
My name is Elliot Lindsay and I'm a current student at Royal Roads University, finishing my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Practice. I am also a biologist at Trout Unlimited Canada, where I have been fortunate to work for over 10 years, rehabilitating habitat for native fishes, including suckers! Sucker Watch is a capstone research project that I am working on as my part of my last semester of studies, as a practicum through Trout Unlimited Canada. What Information Is Needed?
The required fields include some basic information about location, conditions, habitat (water temperature, water clarity, and water depth), and a count of how many suckers you can spot! If you are lucky enough to spot two species at once, please create a separate observation for each of the species. The more regularly you visit a site, the better! Information on spawn timing will be greatly improved if the beginning, peak and end of the spawning season at a particular site can be documented. Bonus points if you are able to take a water temperature, and even better if you know of a nearby flow gauging station that I can access data from to obtain data on stream discharge.
When should I start?
Information on when suckers are not spawning is very valuable. With spawning starting around this time of year, or in a few weeks or even months depending on your location, observations of inactivity are valuable leading up to the spawn as it helps to refine when spawning activity begins. In an ideal scenario, routine observations of the same location would encompass the lead up to spawning, spawning itself, and the eventual decline in spawning activity to zero. With that being said, if you've only got the time to make a few random observations, that is great too! For example, where I live in Alberta, we've got close to no data on spawning habitats, so any info is good info. You might be more interested in truly diving deep on your local sucker spot, making observations daily of the entire spawning run, or you might be keen to set out on a sucker habitat inventorying extravaganza, uploading sites from across your local region, choose your own adventure and have fun!
Why should I participate?
- Your observations across the range will be summarized in a final report made available to all Sucker Watch participants at the end of the season (mid-summer 2024).
- Your observations will help improve the understanding of sucker spawn timing across the range of the species, and between species.
- As one of the top 500 sucker observers on iNaturalist, let's be honest... many of you will be looking at the spawning suckers this spring anyways, might as well document this amazing phenomenon for science.
- There may be prizes... I can't make any promises right now but I like the idea of recognizing some folks who really went the extra mile. At the least, you will gain the sweet satisfaction of seeing your name in the "top observers" on the project page. What more could you ask for?

Sucker Watch iNaturalist form?
Sounds like a wonderful project. Unfortunately I might not be able to participate much, since I've since moved from where I made most of my past sucker observations, and don't have as-easy access to local creeks that are easy to observe fish in.
Also, it might be helpful to specify exactly which observation fields you want used to record water depth, water temperature, and water clarity, since there seem to be multiple observation fields that exist for each.

I appreciate the feedback as well, when you choose "Sucker Watch" under the "add to project" option when making an observation, there should only be the custom fields required for this project that appear (number of individuals spotted, waterbody name, water temperature (°C), water depth (m), water clarity, weather description, and comments). Are you seeing something different?
@elliot403 Oh, I didn't know the observation fields would show up when adding an observation. Glad to know that happens. I don't have much experience with traditional projects.
I'm just amazed that my single observation of spawning suckers makes me the 500th top sucker observer on iNat. I'll keep an eye out this spring!
Great project! Amazing to see suckers getting the attention they deserve. On it!
If you want (require) all those observation fields, I don't think I'm a good fit for the project. How am I to take the water temp? If I see fish at under surface of the water, how deep is that? Do I measure from the bottom of the fish, the middle of the fish, or the top of the fish? What do the numbers in water clarity represent? If it's sunny out but the area is shaded, what would I report? Making any of those notes in the field creates a level (for me and my circumstances) of complexity and then converting to Celsius and metres from Fahrenheit adds another.
Looking at my own observations within the Suborder Catostomoidei, 4 were photographed at an interpretive event (seined by a naturalist), 5 were dead (4 winter kill, 1 drought-dried creek), and 1 was alive and in water. Would any of those other than the last 1 be of any use to your project?
I'm willing to make note of any fish I see (and I do observe a decent amount of fish and fish behavior around me since I have easy access to a creek and live in the land of 10,000 lakes) and fill out whatever fields I am able to. Do you want those kinds of reports? Or, pretty much, just the more scientifically noted ones?
It looks like the only sucker observations in the area where I live now (North Rim) are down in the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Sadly, I am not in physical condition to make the hike down to the river, or rather the hike back up. Not sure when spawning season is down there, but I also wouldn't want to be on the North Kaibab Trail currently since it is snowing on the North Rim yet again. Could be weeks before the snowpack melts enough for me to manage any hiking on the trail.

@mmmiller the observation fields are not required, but are valuable if you're able/willing to fill them in. Water temp can be measured with an inexpensive thermometer from a hardware store or a meat thermometer, to give some low tech examples. Water depth can be estimated, and is measured from the bottom of the stream to the water's surface. Clarity is subjective but a 0 would be no visibility and 10 would be crystal clear. If it helps with estimation, a foot is 30 cm and 6" is 15cm. Based on the observations you mentioned, I don't think that those would necessarily be what I am looking for with this project, but still valuable observations of the species! For this project, there is an emphasis on spawning suckers and their habitat. Any reports of sucker spawning activity with as little or as much information as you're willing to provide are probably beneficial. In the broader sense, having additional data even just on spawn timing is likely to be beneficial to researchers wishing to understand the ecology of these species across their range.
@elliot403 - thanks for explaining all that. I don't know that I'm a great candidate for this project considering that only 1 of my 10 obs of suckers was of a live fish, and only 1/6th of my fish obs were suckers, and I don't usually know, in the field, what kind of fish I'm observing (so I'd have to take notes on every fish without much chance it would prove useful for this project).
But I appreciate the heads up and I think the project is worthy and I wish you luck in finding some better candidates than myself!
It would be nice if your data entry page identified if you want average or max depth. A reminder on the page about whether a 1 is good or poor clarity would also be helpful for your users.

@belowbluewaterdiver I don't have a preferred species, as long as the post is of spawning activity it is a good fit. As much as I love random observations of a single sucker, for this project in particular it's not what I am looking for.
